Jay Cutler talks about the changes to the Mr. Olympia 2024 lineup, drainage, and why the vacuum doesn't belong in the Open category
In his peak form, Jay Cutler was able to create one of the most fleshed out characters bodybuilding has ever seen. He proved his qualities so much that he took the Mr. Olympia title four times, making him an icon of the sport. Even a decade after his retirement, Cutler remains the only competitor in the Open category to reclaim the Mr. Olympia title after losing it.
Anticipation around the 2024 Mr. Olympia competition continues to rise, with the days until the start of the competition in Las Vegas quickly passing. Despite Nick Walker's decision to leave the competition due to his body's unsatisfactory reaction, Jay Cutler reflects on what's to come at the 60th anniversary edition of the competition, which will take place on October 11 and 12 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Jay Cutler talks about the cast changes for Mr. Olympia 2024, shares his opinion on the vacuum and how he approaches drainage at competitions.
Despite Nick Walker's unexpected withdrawal, Cutler believes the competition will still have an "incredibly strong lineup."
"We have a really strong lineup. No one dares to accurately predict the top six, and the situation has changed significantly this week because one of our top favorites withdrew. Nick Walker has been discussed all year," Cutlernoted . "What do you think?"
"Disappointing," Chris Cormiersaid .
"A little confusing, right?" added Cutler. "You were a fan of his."
"I'm sure a lot of fans wanted to see it, especially after how it went last year," Cormieradded .
"Last year he could have had a chance," Cutlerconcluded .
The reigning Mr. Olympia, Derek Lunsford, prefers not to flex his abs and thighs during the abs and thigh pose. However, Jay Cutler recommends that competitors get around this pose by performing it from the side or using a vacuum.
"We talk about the mid-body being key. If you're on the podium at that level and you don't have the abdominal area of the top competitors, it's hard to say you can be Mr. Olympia. With Derek, you have to ask the question. Derek just - I think it's hard to imagine a Mr. Olympia that can't properly showcase abs and thighs," Cutler said.
"They use vacuum or side poses, they dance around it a lot," Cutler continued. "I'm not a referee, okay? I'm not qualified to judge, but I sit down with my podcast and say you clearly have to be able to show off your abs and thighs. I disagree that the vacuum counts. Why are we changing the history of this pose?"
Cutler believes a Classic Physique category has influenced competitors in a Open category, that's why vacuum poses are increasingly common.
"You see, Classic has changed the perception when it comes to the Open category," Cutleradds .
When it comes to preparing for a bodybuilding competition, Jay Cutler said that oatmeal was one of his favorite foods when sugaring up. He also mentioned that drying and handling water were the hardest parts of the preparation for him.
"I used to use oatmeal when sugaring, but sometimes it can be like cement if you don't have enough liquids. But the hardest part for me was handling the water because when you are dehydrated like that, it affects your mind a lot and you feel confused. I was drinking more than two gallons of water a day, so I had to really limit my intake a lot."
As natural diuretics, Jay Cutler used black coffee and asparagus to accentuate the details of his physique.
"I drank black coffee because it worked as a natural diuretic. I ate asparagus, which is a great natural diuretic. Of course, I also took diuretics, but I think you have to find the right balance - I didn't have to restrict water so much at some competitions, but I remember the dehydration was quite intense. That's what makes the preparation the hardest."
"Hadi and Derek have a better chance of peaking at this event, as does Martin Fitzwater. I've seen what he looks like and he's incredible. I think he will surprise everyone and stir up the waters of the sport."
Jay Cutler talks openly about who he thinks has a chance to fight for the Open category title at Mr. Olympia 2024. He names his "three kings" of the category as Samson Dauda, Hadi Choopan and Derek Lunsford, who he sees as the biggest threats.
Cutler, who has reached the top of the sport four times, understands very well the sacrifices required to win the Sandow trophy, which makes his opinions extremely valuable.
Don't miss the return of Mr. Olympia 2024, which will take place October 11 and 12 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
