Eddie Hall reacts to Hafthor Björnsson's new world record

The world of strength sports has a new king of the deadlift. Icelandic giant Hafthor "Thor" Björnsson, also known as "The Mountain" from Game of Thrones, rewrote history when he successfully lifted an incredible 505 kg at the Eisenhart Black Deadlift Championships in Bavaria. With this feat, he not only broke his own unofficial record of 501 kg from 2020, but most importantly, he broke the previous official competition record of 500 kg, held since 2016 by his eternal rival, Brit Eddie "The Beast" Hall.

Hall, who questioned Björnsson's previous record because it was done in his home gym and not at an official competition, spared no praise this time. He congratulated his rival on his Instagram profile:

"Huge respect to Thor for making history and setting the official world record at 505kg. That's one hell of a move. Records are meant to be broken. Big respect, big love."

Long-standing rivalry

The relationship between the two strongmen has often been strained in the past. Their rivalry dates back at least to the World's Strongest Man competition in 2017, where Hall won by a single point, which Björnsson took hard. The tension came to a head in 2022 when the two men squared off in the boxing ring in a bout dubbed "thetoughest boxing match in history". Björnsson emerged victorious.

Despite the current congratulations, it seems that not all the controversy is over. Hall has indicated in some comments that he still expects an apology from Björnsson for some earlier statements. Still, before the actual record attempt, Hall backed his ace, saying that breaking the record will only benefit the sport as a whole.

Björnsson's performance at 505kg is now an undisputed milestone in the world of strongman and has put an end to the debate over who is the real deadlift record holder. Fans around the world are celebrating this historic moment and are eager to see how the next chapter of this legendary rivalry will unfold.
