Brutal bench-press injury!
British elite powerlifter Dave Richardson suffered a serious injury during a recent training session that prematurely ended his 2025 competition season. While performing a heavy bench press, an unexpected accident occurred that led to a complete bone fracture in his right arm.
The exact weight Richardson was lifting during the workout has not been disclosed, but analysis of available video suggests it was 220 kilograms (486 pounds). This weight was not unusual for him, but this time it led to an unfortunate incident. While lowering the barbell to his chest and taking a short pause, he began to push up when his right arm suddenly relaxed under the pressure. It subsequently transpired that he had suffered a complete fracture, probably of the humerus, which connects the shoulder to the elbow.
Dave Richardson commented on the incident on his Instagram.
"The year 2025 ended competitively for me before it began. A complete clean break in my right arm. To everyone who has and will help me on my road to recovery - thank you. See you soon."
The video below capturing the moment of injury is available on the third frame of his Instagram post. Please note that it contains drastic footage of the injury and therefore caution is advised when watching.
This injury is serious and recovery is expected to take several months. However, given Richardson's determination and willpower, it is safe to assume that he will come back stronger than ever, ready to achieve more impressive feats. This event also serves as a reminder that powerlifting, although a sport focused on strength and technique, carries the risk of injury, so it is important to take proper technique and safety precautions during training.
