World's Strongest Man 2022 | Tom Stoltman becomes the World's Strongest Man again!
The biggest event in strongman sport took place last week when the Strongest Man on the Planet competition took place in Sacramento, California, during May 24-29, 2022. Many great competitors were invited to this show, including winners of previous editions - Tom Stoltman, Oleksii Novikov and Martins Licis for example. Thirty competitors were entered and they really came to the USA from all over the world. How did the race go and in which disciplines did the competitors face off? Let's take a look together.

During the first three days, the strongmen had to compete in predetermined groups, from which only two from each group could advance to the final bout.

| Tom Stoltman | Mitchell Hooper | Oleksii Novikov | Martins Licis | Luke Stoltman |

Day 1 of qualification
Loading Race
In the first discipline of the race, the competitors had to carry five tools over a distance of approximately 8 metres and load them onto a platform. Each implement weighed approximately 120 kilograms (265 pounds), but their awkward shapes made it difficult for the competitors to carry them. The time limit was 75 seconds, so the goal was to load as many tools as possible in the shortest time.
Deadlift Ladder
In the second World's Strongest Man 2022 event, competitors had to lift five consecutively heavier loaded dumbbells. The weight progression was as follows. 300-kg (660-lb) / 320-kg (705-lb) / 340-kg (750-lb) / 360-kg (795-lb) / 380-kg (840-lb ).
Day two of qualification
Car Walk
The third event of the World's Strongest Man 2022 competition was the old-school Car Walk. Competitors had to lift and carry a car for a length of 20 metres. The car weighed approximately 950 pounds (430 kilograms) and the time limit for this event was 60 seconds. However, the goal was to complete the event as quickly as possible.
Log Lift
World's Strongest Man 2022 couldn't be without one of the most classic Strongman events ever - Log Lift. Although there are several variations of this event, competitors this time had to lift the log for the number of reps. The log weighed 145 kilograms (320 pounds), and the time limit to perform the most reps was 75 seconds.
Day three of qualifying
Wrecking Ball Hold
Contestants had to grasp and lift a bar that was attached to a huge wrecking ball below them. The strongmen then attempted to hold the bar for as long as they could. The timer stopped as soon as the wrecking ball below them touched the ground. The weight of the wrecking ball was 228 kilograms (500 pounds).
Stone Off
Only those who finished second and third with total points after the five previous events took part in the next elimination battle for the final. Stone Off can also be considered a "last chance qualifier", as the winner of this duel advanced to the final. Two contestants stood on opposite sides of a pole that is 1.25 meters (4′ 1″) high. They took turns throwing a stone over the pole and the first one to fail this task lost.

- Mitchell Hooper
- Oleksii Novikov
- Martins Licis

Day 1 of the finals
Giant's Medley
Contestants had to carry two 120-kilogram (265-pound) boxes, followed by a 455-kilogram (1,003-pound) yoke. Each of the three implements had to be carried for a length of 10 metres, with a time limit of 75 seconds.
A youngster from Canada, Mitchell Hooper, won the first World's Strongest Man 2022 event, even though it was his first international competition. After his incredible performances in the qualifying stages, Mitchell is now the very likely winner of the 2022 WSM. Second place in this event went to Tom Stoltman, who beat Oleksii Novikov by less than one tenth of a second.

Noviko dominated this event with great ease. Oleksi took an average of four seconds to complete each repetition. This suggests that he was not resting at all, but just lifting until the time ran out. Tom Stoltman and Trey Mitchell shared second place as they each played 13 incredible reps.
- Oleksii Novikov - 15 reps / 10 points
- Tom Stoltman - 13 reps / 8.5 points

Flintstone Barbell
The Flintstone Barbell, also known as the "back-the-neck press", is one of the greatest classic Strongman events of all time. The goal of the competitors was to try to get as much weight over the mound as possible. Novikov absolutely dominated the event, lifting 246kg and even setting a new world record!
- Oleksii Novikov - 246 kilograms (542 pounds) / 10 points
- Tom Stoltman - 240 kilograms (529 pounds) / 9 points

- Eythor Melsted - 190 kilograms (419 pounds) / 1.5 points
Day two of the finals
Bus Pull
The fourth event in the World's Strongest Man 2022 finals was the classic Bus Pull. Although it is unclear how much the bus weighed, the contestants had 75 seconds to travel 30 metres with the vehicle strapped to their backs.
Oleksii Novikov took a big step in the right direction when he won the Bus Pull event. There's no doubt that heavier athletes have an advantage in events like this, but Novikov beat them all despite being the lightest competitor at World's Strongest Man 2022. Martins Licis came within one point of Tom Stoltman.
- Oleksii Novikov - 0:41.51 s / 10 points
- Martins Licis - 0:42.18 s / 9 points
- Tom Stoltman - 0:44.50 s / 8 points
- Brian Shaw - 0:44,69 s / 7 points
- Trey Mitchell - 0:45.72 s / 6 pts

- Gabriel Rheaume - 0:52,22 s / 1 point
Power Stairs
The fifth event of the finals was another classic WSM event where athletes had to lift three weights weighing 226 kilograms (498.2 pounds) up three flights of stairs. Thus, a total of nine stairs were climbed. The time limit for this event was 75 seconds.
Oleksii Novikov lost many points in this event, which probably cost him the victory in the end. Tom Stoltman took second place overall with nine points. However, the big surprise was Maxime Boudreault who won this event and shocked everyone.
- Maxime Boudreault - 9 in 0:39.07 / 10 points
- Tom Stoltman - 9 in 0:41.04 / 9 points
- Martins Licis - 9 in 0:44.56 s / 8 points
- Brian Shaw - 8 in 1:09.03 s / 7 points
- Mitchell Hooper - 7 in 0:32.36s / 6 points

Atlas Stones
The Atlas Stones are traditionally the final event of most Strongman competitions and World's Strongest Man 2022 is no exception. Five stones were placed in front of the competitors, and their weights ranged from 140 kilograms (309 pounds) to 200 kilograms (441 pounds). The time limit was 60 seconds, with athletes performing the event in groups of two.
Tom Stoltman is one of the kings in the Atlas Stones and it remained that way. He scored 10 points and from the start it looked like a sure win for him. However, Oleksii Novikov finished last in the Atlas Stones and was overtaken in the overall standings by Martins Licis.
- Tom Stoltman - 5 in 0:25.76s / 10 points
- Maxime Boudreault - 5 in 0:28.04 s / 9 points
- Trey Mitchell - 5 in 0:33.06 / 8 points
- Brian Shaw - 5 in 0:39.29 s / 7 points
- Martins Licis - 5 in 0:45.74 s / 6 points
- Luke Stoltman - 4 in 0:25.78 s / 5 points
- Eythor Ingolfsson Melsted - 4 in 0:28.87 s / 4 points
- Gabriel Rheaume - 4 in 0:33,55 s / 3 points
- Mitchell Hooper - 4 in 0:33.78 / 2 points
- Oleksii Novikov - 4 in 0:36,70 s / 1 point
Overall results
Tom Stoltman won his second title in a row, defeating three previous WSM champions. Despite it being a close battle for most of the race, Tom won the 2022 WSM by 10 points. Oleksii Novikov and Martins Licis finished on 43 points. However, because Licis had the faster time on the Atlas Stones, he took second place. Oleksii Novikov eventually dropped down to third place.
