Spirulina is a microscopic aquatic cyanobacteria that is green to dark blue when dried. It has been used as a source of nutrients by ancient peoples in the Americas, Africa and the Middle East. More than 60 % of the weight of spirulina is full-fat protein. In addition, spirulina contains minerals such as magnesium, iron, calcium, zinc, potassium, vitamin B12 and very powerful antioxidant substances - chlorophyll , phycocyanins, carotenoids and betacarotene.

Spirulina has no cell walls, so it is very easy to digest. As the name suggests, it has a spiral structure and its green-blue colour comes from the green chlorophyll and blue phycocyanin. In addition to the colouring, these substances give spirulina its powerful antioxidant and other properties that place it at the forefront of green superfoods.

The first documented mention of spirulina dates back to the 1500s, and it is believed to have been an important source of nutrients for the Aztecs and other Central American peoples. NASA uses spirulina as a dietary supplement and source of micronutrients for astronauts on space missions. According to NASA, the nutritional value of 1 000 kg of fruit and vegetables is equivalent to 1 kg of spirulina.

There are few countries in the world with ideal climatic conditions for freshwater algae production. These include Japan, Taiwan, India, Greece, Spain and the United States. Puhdistamo spirulina comes from Taiwan, where the climate is ideally warm and the mountain waters are naturally clear.
