Fresh and pure fish oils from Alaska

Capsules of pure Alaskan fish oil derived from Alaskan cod living in the Gulf of Alaska and Bering Sea. This is the northernmost part of the Pacific Ocean bordering the North Pole. The cod fillets go to the shops, while the trimmings are used to make fish oil. Thanks to this sustainable practice (ethical fishing), no extra fish are caught. Arctic Blue has therefore earned the MSC quality label. In a modern facility in the USA, the oil is purified and concentrated, and its freshness is also verified (very low Totox value). By maintaining freshness and a very low oxidation level , Arctic Blue fish oil has no fishy smell or aftertaste.

Wild oily fish such as cod, herring or mackerel are very good sources of omega-3 unsaturated fatty acids such as EPA and DHA as well as vitamin D. However, fish with a low fat content such as tilapia or pangasius contain very little of these important nutrients. Pure Arctic fish oil with vitamin D is therefore ideal for anyone who does not like to eat fatty fish. Omega-3s are very important building blocks, 20% of the fat in our brains is DHA.

Authorised health claims according to Commission Regulations (EU) No 432/2012, No 536/2013 and Council Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006:

DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function / DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal vision / EPA and DHA contribute to normal heart function (beneficial effect is achieved with an intake of 250 mg of EPA and DHA per day) / DHA and EPA contribute to the maintenance of normal blood triglyceride levels / DHA and EPA contribute to the maintenance of normal blood pressure

Vitamin D contributes to the normal absorption/utilization of calcium and phosphorus / Vitamin D contributes to normal blood calcium levels / Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bone health / Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal muscle function / Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal teeth / Vitamin D contributes to normal immune system function Vitamin D is involved in the process of cell division.

Sustainable fishing - MSC certification

To be sustainable , it is necessary to protect food resources in the form of marine animals and not damage the oceans, the environment or local communities. Therefore, products made from whole ground fish or many small fish will not receive this certification. Grinding whole fish is highly uneconomic; a sustainable option is to use the trimmings left over after using the fish for meat. Arctic Blue oils are therefore made from the trimmings of cod fillets. Because of the lower price, many fish oils are made from sardines and anchovies, small fish with a typically strong salty taste that were considered unmarketable waste just 70 years ago. Just to give you an idea, it takes 30 anchovies to make one fish oil capsule. Such fishing is known as reduction fishing and is inherently unsustainable - it uneconomically destroys entire populations of fish that are used only for oil, the meat being used as livestock feed. And because small fish such as sardines or anchovies are a food source for larger species such as dolphins or seabirds, this fishing disrupts the marine ecosystem.

Highest purity with respect for nature

Pure Arctic MSC fish oil is made from fresh cut-off fillets of wild Arctic cod. These fish live in the Gulf of Alaska and the Bering Sea, the northernmost part of the Pacific Ocean bordering the North Pole. These are some of the cleanest waters in the world, and it is no exaggeration to compare them to the plastic soup in the Pacific between Asia and South America. Arctic Blue fish oil is tested for more than 200 possible chemicals, especially heavy metals, PCBs and dioxins. In the next step, the oil is purified using advanced technologies. The result is an extremely pure fish oil suitable for young children and pregnant women.

Arctic MSC pure fish oil is produced according to GMP. The Good Manufacturing Practice standard is the most stringent quality assurance system for dietary supplements in existence. It records in great detail how and under what conditions the product is manufactured. Pure Arctic MSC Fish Oil offers exclusive purity and performance, showing no detectable cadmium in tests up to 50 ppb (billionth of a whole) and no detectable mercury in tests up to 10 ppb. This is up to 10 times below the Norwegian medical standard and the European Pharmacopoeia, which as manufacturers we are legally required to comply with.

Arctic MSC pure fish oil is also regularly tested at 0.5 ppt with no detectable dioxins or furans. The Norwegian Medical Standard and European Pharmacopoeia limits here are 2 ppt (billionths of a whole). These independent analyses are carried out in reputable international laboratories using the testing methodology established by the World Health Organization (WHO). Pure Arctic MSC Fish Oil shows no detectable PCBs (Polychlorinated Biphenyls) during tests up to 0.5 ppt. The Norwegian standard medical limit for PCBs is 3 ppt.

Fresh wild fish oil

Freshness is just as important as purity for the oil. It reflects the state of the delicate omega-3 fatty acids. Freshness can of course be measured by smelling or tasting. Fresh oil will never smell of fishy odour. Freshness can also be measured very precisely in the laboratory and then expressed as a number. This is called the Totox value (Total Oxidation Value). The Totox value is measured regularly in Arctic Blue oils. In many analyses, the degree of oxidation is measured only by the peroxide value. This is insufficient because the peroxides are further converted. We therefore also measure a second indicator, the anisidine value. Only with both of these values can the correct total oxidation and freshness be determined .

This is the internationally recognised value for recognising oxidation in oil. The lower the number, the fresher the oil. The European standard for the Totox value is 26. In our opinion, this is an absurdly high number and we are happy to be below 1/3 of this value to guarantee an exceptionally safe and quality product. The peroxide value of Pure Arctic MSC fish oil for capsules is always between 0 and 0.5 and the anisidine value is < 1 or < 2, so the Totox value is < 2 or < 3. Bottle filling or capsule manufacture increases the Totox value slightly, bringing the value for Arctic Blue MSC fish oil and Algae oil capsule to the usual value of 5 with a maximum variation of 5-10.

Some brands offering omega-3 fats very often and deliberately quote the Totox value of the original raw material, i.e. the fish oil, before the oil is infused / encapsulated into the final product. A fair manufacturer will always quote the actual Totox value, i.e. the value that corresponds to the state after the oil has been infused. Of course, Artic Blue prides itself on an honest and serious approach to the customer.

To prevent damage to the sensitive omega-3 fatty acids after production, a sophisticated combination of antioxidants is used. These include extracts rich in tocopherols (different types of vitamin E), rosemary extract and ascorbyl palmitate (fat-soluble vitamin C). The low oxidation value is not only better for our organism compared to rancid oil, but it also guarantees that we don't have to add any artificial flavours to mask the oxidised oil. The low oxidation also adds a subtle flavour, so the oil can be conveniently consumed straight from the spoon, added to yoghurt, smoothies, shakes or any cold dish. It is therefore always a good idea to ask for the oxidation value when choosing a fish oil.

What about the ideal ratio between DHA and EPA?

DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) are very similar. The only difference is that DHA has 22 carbons in its chain, while EPA has 20 carbons. DHA has properties related to tissue building, while EPA has properties related to oxidative stress. However, the body is very smart - it converts DHA to EPA as needed (just remove two carbons). Thus, with sufficient DHA intake, the body regulates the ratio between DHA and EPA itself. This is especially important for the brain, heart and nervous system.

In its original and natural form

Pure Arctic MSC fish oil exists only in its natural form, the so-called triglyceride form. Just as all fats are found in fish. Nature invented it for us, this is how the fats contained are most stable. That's why we never use unnatural ethyl ester. Ethyl esters are unstable fats with reduced absorption, a high risk of oxidation and an unpleasant taste when eaten. They are used because they are easier to produce and cheaper. Triglyceride form, on the other hand, is natural, stable and well absorbed by the body.

There is also a moral dimension, using whole fish (sardines and anchovies) for oil uses up an incredible amount of fish that could be used for human consumption. Moreover, these fish are mostly caught on the other side of the world, so we prefer to leave them to local fishermen or larger marine animals who will enjoy them.

We support sustainability and balance

One of our guiding principles is that we do not use krill oil and other commercial sources such as concentrated fish oil from sardines and anchovies as a source. This is because krill oil is an essential food for whales. Commercial omega 3 oils, which focus on quantity and low price, are made from whole ground fish. We believe that it is better and more ethical to produce oil from fish trimmings after they have been used for meat. Moreover, anchovies are again food for dolphins, sea lions, whales and seabirds.

Most of the packaging of our liquid products is made of glass with minimal plastic (in cartons). The droplet products are packaged in biodegradable (compostable) bags (no plastic). The fish collagen powder is packaged in bioplastic packaging made from sugar cane.
