Glutamine, or L-glutamine, is the most abundant amino acid in the body, acting as a building block for protein. It is most abundant in blood plasma and muscle, where it acts as a mediator and helps in the formation of other amino acids. The body can make glutamine on its own, but athletic performance and physical exertion increase its consumption. If there is not enough of it in the body, the body starts to break it down in the muscles. For this reason, gutamine is a popular supplement for bodybuilders and other strength athletes.
