World's Strongest Man 2021 | Tom Stoltman becomes the World's Strongest Man!

The biggest event in strongman sport took place last week, when the race for the strongest man on the planet took place in Sacramento, California, during June 15-20, 2021. It differed from the previous editions mainly because the strongmen had to fight for the title in the aforementioned California and not in Florida, as it used to be. Twenty-five competitors were registered for the competition, who came to the USA from all over the world.

During the first three days, the strongmen had to compete in predetermined groups, from which only the first two from each group could advance to the final duel.

The first day

Loading Medley

The first task that awaited all competitors was to carry heavy loads over a certain distance. These were either heavy barrels or iron anvils.

Squat / deadlift

The second discipline was different for different groups. The strongmen from groups one and three were tasked with doing as many reps as possible on squats with 370kg. The competitors in groups two, four and five were expected to deadlift with 350kg for the highest number of reps.

Second day

Fingals Fingers

Groups one, four and five were tasked on the second day to roll iron logs weighing 320lb, 340lb, 350lb, 360lb and 380lb in the first discipline.

Train Push

The competitors in groups two and three had their first discipline on the second day very complicated. First, the organizers planned them to pull a 50 ton train over a distance of 20m. However, everyone's plan was scuppered by technical problems that rendered the train impassable and so the competitors pushed "only" the 20 tonne carriage.

Third day

During the last qualifying day, the competitors had a pressure medley and a Pickaxe Hold.

Overhead Medley

In this event, competitors were tasked with getting a 210 lb and 220 lb single overhead barbell on their heads, followed by a 342 lb "circus barbell" and topped off with a 260 lb axle axle.

Pickaxe Hold

Although this discipline may sound really comical, don't be prejudiced. This discipline was all about holding a 60lb pickaxe in your outstretched hands for as long as possible!

Atlas Stone-Off

The last discipline of the qualifying competition and the third day was prepared for the competitors who finished second and third in their group. The competitors were tasked with tossing Atlas stones weighing 308 lb - 460 lb until one of the competitors could throw the Atlas over the hoop.

Grand Final - Day 1

In the end, the ten strongest fighters who had the best time in the challenging qualification round advanced to the final match.

  • Brian Shaw
  • Trey Mitchell
  • JF Caron
  • Konstantine Janashia
  • Bobby Thompson
  • Maxime Boudreault
  • Tom Stoltman
  • Eythor Ingolfsson Melsted
  • Adam Bishop
  • Luke Stoltman

During the fourth day of competition, but also the first final day, the competitors were treated to some real tasty treats - Giants Medley, Titan's turntable and REIGN Keg Toss

Giants Medley

In this event, the strongmen were tasked with carrying a 440kg (970lb) yoke a distance of 10m and then carrying a 350kg (772lb) iron structure a distance of 15m. Tom Stoltman from Scotland was the best in this discipline.

  1. Tom Stoltman - 0:18:36 (10 points)
  2. Konstantine Janashia - 0:20:31 (9 points)
  3. Brian Shaw - 0:20:53 (8 points)
  4. Luke Stoltman - 0:20:72 (7 points)

  10. Eythor Ingolfsson Melsted - DNF, 10m in 0:12:75 (1 point)

Titan's turntable

The next discipline was really interesting. On an old 19th century train turntable, competitors had to turn a steam train 160 degrees (30m) within a time limit of 75 seconds. Once again Tom Stoltman did this best and scored his second victory in the final discipline!

  1. Tom Stoltman - 0:46:89 (10 points)
  2. Trey Mitchell - 0:52:34 (9 points)
  3. Eythor Ingolfsson Melsted - 0:52:83 (8 points)
  4. Maxime Boudreault - 0:55:16 (7 points)
  5. Luke Stoltman - 0:55:94 (6 points)
  6. Brian Shaw - 0:56:73 (5 points)
  7. Adam Bishop - 0:57:78 (4 points)
  8. JF Caron - 0:57:84 (3 points)
  9. Konstantine Janashia - 1:00:15 (2 points)
  10. Bobby Thompson - 1:02:31 (1 point)

REIGN Keg Toss

The third and final event of the fourth race (the first final) even offered a new world record! In this event, competitors were tasked with throwing a 15kg (33lb) keg high over a bar, but not allowed to fall (same method as the high jump). The bar rose to heights of 5.75m, 6.5m, 6.75m, 7m, up to 7.3m (the world record was 7.2m). However, the bar finally stopped at an incredible 7.75m when Brian Shaw broke his own world record by half a metre!

  1. Brian Shaw - 7.75m (10 points)
  2. Tom Stoltman - (8.5 points)
  3. Maxime Boudreault - 7.5 m (8.5 points)
  4. Konstantine Janashia - 7.26 m (7 points)
  5. Eythor Ingolfsson Melsted - 6.75 m (4 points)
  6. Luke Stoltman - 6.75 m (4 points)
  7. Adam Bishop - 6.75 m (4 points)
  8. JF Caron - 6.75 m (4 points)
  9. Bobby Thompson - 6.75 m (4 points)
  10. Trey Mitchell - 6 metres (1 point)

Grand Final - Day 2

Here we go. The last day of the finals. Who will win the title of World's Strongest Man? We'll have to wait a little longer to find out, because there are three more events to go - Max Log Lift, KNAACK Deadlift and Atlas Stones.

Max Log Lift

As you can probably guess, in this discipline the strongmen went for their max on the log lift. The greatest strength in this "event" was again shown by the Scotsman Tom Stoltman, who managed to get an incredible 215kg on his head!

  2. Maxime Boudreault - 205 kg (8 points)
  3. Trey Mitchell - 205 kg (8 points)

  10. Adam Bishop - 170 kg (1 point)

KNAACK Deadlift

In the penultimate event of the entire competition, competitors were tasked with producing as many reps as possible in 60s on a somewhat unconventional deadlift. Three competitors managed to do this - Trey Mitchell, JF Caron and Adam Bishop each produced 10 reps!

  1. Trey Mitchell - 10 reps (9 points)
  2. JF Caron - 10 reps (9 points)
  3. Adam Bishop - 10 reps (9 points)

  9. Luke Stoltman - 6 reps (2 points)
  10. Maxime Boudreault - 3 reps (1 point)

Atlas Stones

The last discipline of the race and the one that could still shuffle the final standings - Atlas Stones. As the name suggests, the competitors were tasked with lifting successively stones weighing 140 kg to 210 kg in the shortest possible time. This was best done by Tom Stoltman, who dominated the entire race this year!

  1. Tom Stoltman - 5 stones in 0:20:21 (10 points)
  2. Maxime Boudreault - 5 stones in 0:28:63 (9 points)
  3. Brian Shaw - 5 stones in 0:31:45 (8 points)

  5. Trey Mitchell - 5 stones in 0:37:26 (6 points)
  6. Konstantine Janashia - 4 stones in 0:20:81 (5 points)
  7. Adam Bishop - 4 stones in 0:30:61 (4 points)
  8. Luke Stoltman - 4 stones in 0:33:50 (3 points)
  9. Eythor Ingolfsson Melsted - 4 stones in 0:33:65 (2 points)
  10. Bobby Thompson - withdrawn
