The secret to Jay Cutler's massive arms revealed!
Have you ever dreamed of arms that could compete with the best in bodybuilding? Jay Cutler, a four-time Mr. Olympia titleholder, is an icon whose training methods are still studied and emulated today. Although the paths to the top may differ, Cutler's philosophy for building massive arms offers a unique perspective that may shake up your current training habits.
Forget low reps.
While many bodybuilders swear by heavy weights and low reps, Jay Cutler went a different route. His secret lies in high-volume training. Instead of focusing on 4-6 reps with maximum weight, Cutler prefers a range of 8 to 20 reps per set. Why? The goal was to maximize pumping and blood flow to the muscles.

This method ensures that the muscles are under constant tension for longer periods of time, which stimulates hypertrophy (muscle growth) in a completely different way. Think of it as filling the muscle to the brim with blood and nutrients, resulting in an incredible "pump" effect and promoting long-term growth.
Don't forget the triceps
Many people focus primarily on the biceps when training the arms, but Cutler knew that developing the triceps, which make up roughly two-thirds of the arm's volume, is key to truly massive arms. To ensure that his triceps were as formidable as his biceps, he included specific exercises in his plan.
One of his favorite exercises was one-arm kic-backs. This exercise allowed him to perfectly isolate the triceps and focus on the peak contraction. He performed it with a repetition range of 10 to 12 repetitions, making sure to momentarily contract and "squeeze" the muscle as much as possible during the top phase of the movement.
How to apply it in your training?
- Increase volume: Don't be afraid to experiment with higher repetitions. Try incorporating sets of 12, 15 or even 20 reps.
- Focus on getting pumped: Your goal should be to feel full and burning in your muscles, not just to lift as much weight as possible.
- Give love to your triceps: Make sure you give your triceps the same, if not more attention than your biceps. Incorporate isolation exercises like kip-backs and focus on technique.
- Series to failure: occasionally incorporate "burnout" series, where you continue repeating with lower weight until the muscle is completely exhausted.
Jay Cutler has proven that there is more than one way to reach the top. His high-volume approach is a great alternative for those looking to break stagnation and take their arm growth to the next level. Try incorporating his principles into your training and watch what happens!
