The 2020 Arnold Classic will take place without fans!
Author: COVID-19, a viral disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, has dramatically affected this year's Arnold Sports Festival, which includes the second most prestigious competition in the world of professional bodybuilding, the Arnold Classic!
Although as recently as Monday, the organizers of this spectacular event stated that no changes were planned due to the spread of the Coronavirus, information surfaced overnight today stating otherwise! In fact, a substantial part of the event has been cancelled!
This fact was stated during a press conference attended by Mike DeWine, Governor of Ohio, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, co-founder of the Arnold Sports Festival.
It goes without saying that this is by no means an easy decision, however, as Arnold Schwarzenegger stated, the Arnold Sports Festival is the world's largest healthy lifestyle and fitness festival, and so with the potential growing risk of public health contagion, the economic aspects of the event must take precedence!
The online petition to cancel the Arnold Sports Festival, which has 10,700 signatures at the time of publication, certainly playsa large part in this decision and reads:
I fear hundreds of thousands of people will travel to Columbus, Ohio for the 2020 Arnold Sports Festival as the coronavirus spreads around the world.
Many major events have been cancelled around the world because of the coronavirus.
The event will bring thousands of people from more than eighty countries to Columbus. This will greatly increase the risk of the coronavirus spreading in Ohio.
Please consider our petition to cancel the 2020 Arnold Sports Festival for the safety of all Ohioans, especially children, the elderly, people with diabetes or other pre-existing conditions.
Cancellation would result in the Arnold Fitness EXPO having tens of thousands of people (up to 250,000 total!) in a confined space for four days. This would have presented ideal conditions for the spread of Coronavirus!
The competitions will also be severely restricted. It is not yet known whether some will be cancelled, but it is already certain that the competitions will have to do without spectators!
The only exception, for the time being, is the Arnold Classic, where the final part of the competition could take place in the presence of spectators.
