Strongman´s Games Aš 2020 - results

On Saturday, 18th July, the 9th Strongman's Games Aš took place. The organizer of the strongman competition was Čestmír Šíma, who, with the help of his team, once again held one of the toughest competitions in the Czech Republic. At the same time, the races were organized under the banner of the Czech Strength Sports Association.

On the agenda of the day were both amateur and professional strongmen, who gathered together forty-one.

Amateurs

There were plenty of amateurs - one thirty strongmen competed together in five disciplines:

  • Super Yoke (300 kg over 15 m)
  • Frame Carry (280kg fence at 15m)
  • Monster Axle Deadlift (fat axle deadlift for maximum weight)
  • Tire Flip (2x450kg tire) + Keg Carry (keg carry - 2×120kg for 15m)
  • Duck Walk (duck walk with 200kg) + Power Stairs (carry 200kg up 4 stairs of power)

After all the results were added up, the final standings were as follows. The third place with 117 points went to Stepan Bystrinets. Second place with 123 points went to Martin Zelenka. Jaroslav Duron (136,5 points) managed to win the first place, who also summarized the course of the competition for you:

Hi Jardo. I have to ask you at the beginning, were you very "broken" after such a hard race?

Hi Ondra. I'm not a bit broken after the races except for a pulled left biceps. I'll give my CNS a rest and continue my training.

Are there any harder strongman competitions for amateurs in the Czech Republic than the one in Aš?

Generally the competitions in Asha were taken as the hardest ones, but this year I think it is not so. With the growing trend of adding weights everywhere, it's shifting a lot. The toughest competition this year will probably be the 5.9. MCR in Osek, organized by professional strongman Michal Tichý.

Were you planning to enter yourself or did someone recruit you?

This year every competition is rare because of the situation from the spring, which affected probably everybody, so I didn't hesitate with the entry and as soon as Čestmir announced the competition I entered.

Were you already thinking about first place before the race, or did you not even think you could win?

I believed in first place for about two weeks before the race, but then came the stomach flu and immediately after that a cold, which took me out of my pre-race regime for two weeks. Which wasn't good for the psyche, but in the end it worked out thanks to a great atmosphere.

One thirty riders took part in the amateur races, was it noticeable?

It was definitely noticeable, but only in a good way. At this strongman level everyone supports each other, so the more people, the more encouragement for the competitors. At the same time I'm happy that more and more people and young guys are signing up for the competitions. And I would like to encourage them to participate in the other competitions that will follow.

Which of the disciplines did you find "the easiest" and "the hardest"?

The easiest/best for me was probably the monster axle deadlift. I like pulling disciplines, so it was great for me. Nothing was the hardest, but the fence gave us all a hard time thanks to its construction and fresh paint.

How would you rate your performance? Did you make a mistake anywhere?

My assessment of my performance is that although I won, there is room for improvement. I'm rash and that's why I'm making beginner's mistakes. This will hopefully be eliminated with increasing experience in the next years of racing.

What did you say about the organisation and running of the races? Did everything go as it should?

Organisation is one thing I will never complain about. Even with such a high number of competitors, great service, course and facilities for the competitors. With that I would like to say a big thank you to everyone involved in the races and doing it for the "good word".

It may be a long time, but are you planning to attend next year?

It's not that long and I definitely want to participate. Next year it probably won't be in the amateur league, but it's a bigger challenge for me to face the strongest people from the Czech Republic.

Okay Jardo, thank you very much and congratulations for the first place!

Thank you very much and hopefully more races soon!

Professionals

After the amateurs, it was the turn of the professionals, who also had five disciplines.

  • Super Yoke - 600 kg at 15 m

  • Monster Axle Deadlift (deadlift with fat axle for maximum weight)
  • Frame Carry (380kg fence at 15m)
  • Viking Press (max reps with 210kg in 1 minute)
  • Power Stairs (stairs of 200kg, 240kg, 280kg strength)

There were considerably fewer pros compared to amateurs. Ten fighters tried their best, but these strongmen climbed the podium. The third place with 32,5 points went to Lukáš Svoboda. The second place went to Jiří Dejmal with 38 points and the first place was traditionally taken by Čestmír Šíma with 50 points, who later commented on the competition as follows:

Yesterday's victory is very nice and cool, but the absolute best for me is this little blond bombshell Simon. I'm sure he would have liked me just as much even if I hadn't won, but I'm still very happy that he could see his dad win and enjoy the joy with him. Thanks to all of you who cheered and wished me success, you are great and I am really happy for you.

At the end you can read an interview with Honza Krasinski, who took part in the race as a spectator.

Hi Honza, so what was it like to watch the races and not race?

Hi, hello everyone. It's great to come and cheer and support the guys, but of course it *did* piss me off at times that I wasn't standing there with them.

How did you like the race this time from a spectator's perspective?

The races in Aš already have a tradition and even the shift because of the crown didn't take away from the quality. There were a lot of strong riders, a lot of fans, a lot of people, a great atmosphere and most importantly the weather was good.

How do you rate the level of the amateur part and the pro part?

I'm not really the person to judge the amateur and pro level in the Czech Republic, but the bar was set pretty high in both cases. In the amateurs a lot of guys showed brutal performances, no shuffling on clouds of belts and running where hundredths decide.

The pro was a very nice spectacle. 600kg yoke, axle deadlifts, 370kg fence and more. These are weights you just don't see so a big motivation for me to train for next year :) Congratulations to CZEST and Jard for winning, all honor to the losers :))

And how do you evaluate the competitions in general? Were they good or would you say anything?

I wouldn't reproach anyone , I never organized races myself and I don't know what all the work is involved, how many people are needed to do it and I think it's a lot of nerves !!! As I said, these races have a tradition of several years and there are still a lot of competitors ! That says it all.

Do you think there are any harder races in the Czech Republic than the ones organized by Čestmir?

Chestim is not afraid to set the bar high and we don't have any harder races here. What I've been observing lately, the others don't want to be left behind either and they are all gradually adding weight. I'm happy about that because it's more watchable for me when there are weights that not everyone can put on.

You plan to beat Jirka Vytiska in the national loglift record this weekend. How much are you planning to lift and do you think a lot of competitors will go over 180kg?

I have already surpassed the 180kg log a few times in training and when it all sits right, it is trained to 190kg. However, to make it official, we have to go to Golcak for the races, which will be a big deal this year.

My estimate for 180 is 5 people. I know all these guys, they are all trained and I say if it sticks, it will be a terrible flying record, not a record.

Okay Honza, thank you very much for bringing the Strongman's Games to the eyes of the spectator, take care and have a great day!

Thank you very much for the interview, thank you for you, thank you for all my fans and fans of this sport! Everybody come and make it a memorable year.
