Does testosterone turn you into an aggressive jerk? Scientists have teamed up to debunk the biggest myth
You’ve definitely seen this. Someone at the gym throws a dumbbell around, acts like a wild animal, or makes a completely illogical, risky decision. What do people say? “Sure, it’s testosterone. His hormones are running wild.” There’s a myth that testosterone shuts down your brain, fills you with blind ego, and turns you into an aggressive beast. But science has just said a clear NO.
The link between testosterone and poor decision-making emerged about ten years ago. Back then, a single study gave men testosterone (or a placebo) and had them solve trick questions. The testosterone group failed miserably. Newspaper headlines went wild, and a single study became an irrefutable fact.
But here’s what happened—other labs repeated the test three times and… found absolutely nothing. But the myth had already taken on a life of its own.

An Epic Battle Among Scientists
And then something happened that we rarely see in the world of science. The researcher who came up with the original (and sensationalized) study and his biggest critics joined forces. They created a massive, watertight study involving 1,000 men. They locked in all the parameters before the measurements even began, so that no one could retroactively skew the results.
The result? Testosterone does not affect logical reasoning. It doesn’t make men slower or dumber, nor does it cause them to take unnecessary risks. It also had no effect on whether the men were fair or on their levels of generosity and competitiveness (measured in nine different ways).
So what is the ego responsible for?
When the researchers took a closer look at the data, something else jumped out at them. Both groups (those given testosterone and those given a placebo) thought they had answered 5 out of 7 questions correctly. The reality? On average, they got barely three right. It wasn’t testosterone that clouded their judgment. It was simply men’s tendency to overestimate their own abilities.
And what about that legendary aggression?
Testosterone doesn’t automatically lead to aggression. The hormone can’t take a calm introvert and turn him into a raging monster. Studies found only one exception: testosterone slightly increased aggression in men who already had a strong desire for dominance and very low self-control.
The takeaway: Testosterone doesn’t change your personality. Not at all. It merely amplifies who you already are. If you’re a normal, reasonable guy, more testosterone won’t turn you into an idiot. So the next time someone acts like an idiot, let’s not blame it on hormones.
