"To everyone who didn't believe me!"
This was a competition that will be remembered for a long time to come. In an incredibly close battle filled with massive muscle mass and extreme conditioning, it was ultimately the infamous “freak factor” and perfect timing of peak form that decided the outcome. Nick Walker took the legends’ advice to heart, brought granite-like toughness to the stage, and rightfully became the new Mr. Olympia champion.
When the last two men—Samson Dauda and Nick Walker—stood on the stage in Las Vegas, the tension in the arena was thick enough to cut with a knife. But as soon as host Bob Cicherillo announced the name of the new winner, The Mutant immediately collapsed in a flood of emotion. His journey to the very top had been anything but easy, and in his post-contest statement, he let out everything he’d been bottling up inside for the past few years.
Time Stood Still: The Moment That Changed Everything
“When Bob said my name, I felt like time had literally stopped. Everything went black before my eyes, and suddenly all I could feel was Samson hugging me and congratulating me,” Walker described the most emotional moment of his career.
“I’ve worked my whole life for this one moment. All the pain, the sacrifices, those tough days when I wanted to give up… today it all makes perfect sense. This victory isn’t just mine. It’s for my family and for every single fan who had my back when others doubted me.”
A Comeback from Rock Bottom and a Shut-Up to the Critics
Journalists and fans alike remember well the dark period Walker went through. Just before the 2023 Olympics, he tore his hamstring and had to withdraw from the competition. Many critics claimed at the time that he would never be able to return in good enough shape to compete for the title, and that his physique lacked the necessary aesthetics.
“People forget all too quickly how low I was,” Walker said heatedly during a press conference. “When I tore my muscle and had to watch the Olympia from the stands, I cried like a little boy. It broke me. I read comments about how ‘The Mutant’ was finished, how I was too wide around the waist, and how I’d never win. And you know what? I took all that poison, locked myself in the gym, and turned it into fuel. Today, I’ve definitely shut all those people up.”
A Thank You to the Coach and Cutler’s Winning Advice
Nick didn’t forget to mention the man behind his transformation—coach Matt Jansen.
“Matt isn’t just my coach—he’s my brother. When I doubted myself, he believed in me. He made me suffer through my diet more than ever before, but thanks to him, I’m in the best shape of my life today.”
His mental attitude also played a huge role in this triumph. Just a few weeks before the competition, the legendary Jay Cutler advised Walker to completely cut himself off from the pressure of social media and focus purely on building muscle hardness.
“Jay was absolutely right. I deleted the apps from my phone, stopped reading predictions, and just worked hard. That peace of mind made a huge difference on stage. I had no cortisol in my system, no stress—just pure focus.”
And what’s next? The Mutant is clear:
“Now I’m going to celebrate big time with my family, eat the biggest burger in Vegas, but on Monday I’ll be back in the gym. This isn’t the end of the journey. This is just the beginning of the Mutant era, and I intend to defend this title for as long as I can walk!”
