The legendary Bill Grant, "Man of Steel", has died at the age of 80
The world of bodybuilding has been hit with very sad news. Bill Grant, one of the most prominent figures of the golden era of bodybuilding and holder of prestigious titles, has died at the age of 80. News of his passing began to spread on social media on June 3, 2026, and immediately sparked a wave of condolences across the fitness community.
The exact cause of his death has not been disclosed, but according to available information, he was born on May 29, 1946, so he recently celebrated his 80th birthday.
A key face of the old school
Known as the "Man of Steel", Bill Grant was one of the most respected bodybuilding personalities of the 1970s. He competed at a time when bodybuilding was more of an underground sport than a glitzy mainstream industry. His physique stood out for its amazing symmetry, classic lines and perfect stage presence - qualities that impressed judges at the time as much as raw muscle volume. He started exercising as a child and managed to maintain his phenomenal form for an incredibly long time - even in his sixties, he impressed fans with his superbly sculpted body.

An impressive competition career
During his rich career, which included more than 44 professional starts in the USA and Europe, he achieved a number of fantastic successes. His first major breakthrough came in the first half of the 1970s.
Bill Grant's greatest milestones:
- 1972: Winning the WBBG Pro Mr. America.
- 1974.
- Mr. Olympia: Recorded great finishes in the lightweight division - 4th place (1976), 5th place (1977) and 7th place (1978). Competed there again in 1984 (15th place overall) and returned to the Masters Olympia in 1994 where he finished 8th.
- Other accomplishments: third place at the IFBB Night of Champions (1978) and third place at the IFBB World Pro Championships (1984).
More than just a competitor
Grant's influence was far from limited to posing on the competition stage. Fans may remember him from the legendary documentary Pumping Iron (Iron Schwarzenegger) or Hustler of Muscle Beach. He also created his own fitness program "Fit for Life" and has worked for decades as a respected personal trainer and healthy lifestyle ambassador.
In addition to sports, Bill Grant had a huge heart. He was active in charity and community support - whether it was youth programs, spreading awareness of Parkinson's disease, or helping people with spinal cord injuries. The bodybuilding world is losing another irreplaceable legend. But Bill Grant's legacy, his classic aesthetic and his indelible contribution to the sport will be with us forever. Rest in peace, Men of Steel...
