The Fall and Rebirth of the “New Arnold”: Calum Speaks About His Demons and the End of His Career
After a hiatus of several months on social media, Calum Von Moger is reaching out to his fans again. In a recent video on his YouTube channel, he spoke openly about his move to Thailand, his battle with addiction, and why his dreams of conquering the bodybuilding world are slowly fading away.
Fans once hailed him as the successor to Arnold Schwarzenegger—he even played the legendary bodybuilder in the movie *Bigger*. Many had high hopes for him and speculated about his chances of winning the Classic Physique title at the prestigious Mr. Olympia competition. Instead of triumphs, however, a series of harsh blows from fate followed.
Von Moger suffered serious injuries after jumping from a second-story window and was placed in a medically induced coma. Although he managed to recover physically, he was subsequently arrested for aggressive driving (so-called “road rage”), and in 2022, he was deeply affected by the tragic loss of his brother, who took his own life.
Detox in Thailand and a Fresh Start
To cope with his mounting problems, the 36-year-old Australian decided to make a radical break. He moved to Thailand, where he sought peace for a fresh start, and imposed a strict social media detox on himself.
“I’m sure a lot of you are wondering where I’ve been. The answer is very short: I was away. I needed to take a break this year and get away from all the noise on social media. To do a sort of detox. I’m still trying to figure a lot of things out,” Von Moger confided in a video from late June 2026.

The End of Bodybuilding Dreams
One of the hardest steps for him was accepting the fact that his highest competitive ambitions are likely a thing of the past.
“The goals, dreams, and aspirations I had as a teenager when I first got into bodybuilding have faded away, or simply aren’t achievable anymore. I denied it for a long time and didn’t even realize it,” he admitted openly. Von Moger said he has finally come to terms with the fact that he won’t be stepping onto the Classic Physique Olympia stage, and he has embraced Thailand as his new home.
The Struggle with Addiction and a Change in Perspective
A pivotal moment for him in Thailand was the support of friends who took him to his first Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meeting. This experience helped him gain a new perspective on life and face his problems head-on.
“They took me to my first NA meeting. That’s what started it all for me. Then I decided on my own to take action. It had to come from within me. If I hadn’t wanted to go there, it wouldn’t have worked,” he explained . He said that taking a break from social media helped him realize that he had been taking a lot of things for granted and was just trying to run away from his problems.
Health and Fitness Come First
Calum recently moved into a new apartment, where, in his own words, he’s trying to settle down for good and work on his personal development. His main priorities now are overall wellness, maintaining an active lifestyle, and productivity.
During his last visit to the U.S., he hinted at a change in his approach to fitness in a training video. He stated that he is now focusing more on overall athleticism.
“I’m excited. This is the first time in my life that I’m okay with losing muscle mass,” he said at the time.
Despite enormous obstacles, Von Moger is determined to stay fit. His bodybuilding ambitions may have taken a back seat, but his mental health seems to be heading in the right direction for the first time in a long while. For his fan community, this candid comeback is a welcome sign that the former icon has found peace and embarked on a healthier path in life.
