"I'm walking again in two years!" Says Ronnie Coleman, praising Dauda
Through a combination of unrivalled strength and determination, Ronnie Coleman has gone down as a bodybuilding legend, having changed the face of the sport during his professional career. In a recent YouTube video posted on October 28, 2024, "King Ronnie" talked about the timeline of when he expects to be able to walk again and also shared his thoughts on Samson Dauda's victory at Mr Olympia 2024. It has been an eventful journey for bodybuilding legend Ronnie Coleman. He collected eight titles at Mr Olympia, arguably reigning the most dominant of all the champions and his accolades and achievements speak for themselves.
However, he experienced countless setbacks on his way to cementing his position as one of the all-time greats, including several health issues. Coleman lost the ability to walk and underwent more than 13 back surgeries. He is known for lifting incredibly heavy weights, and some have wondered if this contributed to his lack of mobility. However, the bodybuilding icon still trains with vigor even in retirement at the age of 60.
In his spare time, Coleman still follows the division he once ruled. Although he doesn't see any Mr. Olympia creating a nearly decade-long dynasty like his own, he still follows some of the sport's greatest talents, such as Samson Dauda. The "Nigerian Lion" who made Mr. Olympia history this year when he won the Open title. On his path to glory, Dauda became the first man from the UK to win this prestigious honour since former six-time title holder Dorian Yates.
Ronnie Coleman talks about the timeline to walk again and discusses Samson Dauda's win at Mr. Olympia 2024
Ronnie Coleman recently sat down with Jay Cutler to discuss Dauda's recent win. They also talked about his road to recovery, including a timetable for when Coleman says he will be able to walk again.
"Yeah, I'm giving myself about a year and a half to be able to walk, maybe on a cane, and then eventually they'll get it to the point where I can walk without a cane."
"So I see it at two years because I remember when I had my neck surgery, the doctors said, 'It's going to take about two years for the numbness in your arm to go away,' and about two years to the day that all the numbness went away and I got the strength back in my right arm," Coleman explained.
Coleman confided that he continues to receive stem cell therapy every five months, which he attributes to the fact that he has been able to regenerate the nerves needed to walk unaided again.
"So I think in about two years I'll be able to regenerate some of those nerves. I go for stem cell treatments, about 300 million every five months."
As for Samson Dauda's impressive win on the prestigious stage, Coleman elaborated on his feelings about his overall "package." He also revealed his opinion on whether Dauda can continue his streak and win multiple titles.
"He brought the best overall form to the podium, even though he wasn't in the best shape by far, but I think the judges were influenced by the package"
"I don't think it's going to happen anymore [to win multiple times]. I think it's going to change for a while."
