Dennis Wolf is still in shape at 47

Bodybuilding retirement looks damn good on Dennis Wolfe. The former Open star, nicknamed "The Big Bad Wolf," hasn't slacked off even years after his competitive career ended, maintaining a physique that many active athletes only dream of.

In a recent social media post, the 47-year-old Wolf showed fans his current form. In a black-and-white photo, he revealed an upper body that still possesses impressive density, detail and overall fullness years after retiring from the scene in 2018.

Remembering the era of the titans

In the bodybuilding era of the 2000s, Wolf was an absolute menace on stage. At 5'11" (about 180 cm), he often had a height advantage over his opponents, and his poses, especially his back poses (back double biceps and lat spread), were literally breathtaking.

Although he never won the coveted Sandow statuette (Mr. Olympia title), he regularly took on the best, including four-time champion Jay Cutler and "The King" Ronnie Coleman.

The biggest win of his career came in 2014 at the prestigious Arnold Classic. To win the championship crown, he had to beat an incredibly loaded lineup that included the late Mr. Olympia Shawn Rhoden, Cedric McMillan, Victor Martinez and Brandon Curry.

New philosophy: health comes first

Today, Wolf, who still keeps a close eye on the happenings in the Men's Open division (often as a guest on Dennis James' podcast The Menace), has a very different focus.

Fitness and continued health are top priorities at his age. Although he admits that he wishes he could lift as heavy weights as he did when he weighed 315 pounds (over 143 kg), he approaches life differently today - with less emphasis on gym performances and personal bests.

He sums up this change in mindset perfectly:

"The point here is that health is a value that is not up for debate. The numbers on the scale or on your bench press mean nothing compared to the numbers on your medical report. [...] Don't wait for warning signs. Love yourself. Get checked. Take care of what you've been given."

Dennis Wolf isn't the only retired bodybuilder who remains in admirable shape. Lee Labrada (father of active IFBB Pro Hunter Labrada) is a similar inspiration, maintaining a muscular physique and visible six-pack even after more than 40 years.

Wolf makes sure that health remains his main concern off the stage. At 47, he's the perfect example of longevity in bodybuilding.
