"Cbum might as well have 10 titles!" Says Mike Sommerfeld after finishing second at Olympia
With Chris Bumstead winning his sixth Classic Physique Olympia 2024 title and retiring, fans have more questions than answers about the future of this division. Runner-up Mike Sommerfeld shocked the world by finishing second, and on October 14 he spoke out about his performance. In addition, he explained why he believes "Cbum" could have won 10 titles if he wanted to.
"I still can't believe it," Mike Sommerfeld said. "I felt really, really good. After that, I just went with the flow. I did everything Neil told me to do and it worked pretty well," Sommerfeld confided.
After a year of speculation, Chris Bumstead finally said goodbye to the stage, leaving fans wondering who would take his place. On paper, Mike Sommerfeld is now the number one contender for his throne, having narrowly edged out the Canadian champion throughout the competition.
Sommerfeld trailed Bumstead by just three points on the scorecards. He showed improvement in his lower body both in terms of weight and separation. His symmetrical upper body also gave him an advantage against other finalists such as Urs Kalecinski and Ramon Queiroz. With Bumstead out of contention for the title, Sommerfeld is in a great position ahead of 2025.
Mike Sommerfeld reacts to finishing 2nd at the 2024 Olympia and talks about Chris Bumstead's retirement, "He could easily win ten times"
Sommerfeld went into the Mr. Olympia 2024 competition without high expectations, which seems to have paid off for him.
"Yes, that was the expectation [of the top five]. I mean, I had no real expectations because I always say not to focus too much on the cherry and forget about the cake. I've had a great journey. I spent every second with my wife during the preparation."
According to Sommerfeld, Chris Bumstead could have won ten titles if he wanted to. He's glad he won't have to witness another Ronnie Coleman-style title reign that would have lasted eight years in a row.
"Honestly, he has such a beautiful great life, a beautiful family, a great business,"
Sommerfeld said. He could win 10 more times and I said, "Please stop Chris, I don't want the Ronnie Coleman story to repeat itself again."
Sommerfeld is still processing his second-place finish and thanked the fans for their support.
"Honestly, I haven't had a second to think about what just happened [being No. 1 in Classic Physique]. People have asked me, how do you feel? I have no idea. I have no idea how I feel."
"I feel the support. I was able to hear the crowd. My phone is constantly ringing and that's all an athlete really needs. We do what we do the same way, we move weights and eat chicken and broccoli and rice, but people text me like hey Mike, you inspired me, you motivated me, but basically we're all doing the same thing," he shared his impressions.
With Bumstead's departure from Classic Physique, the situation has changed. His throne will be claimed by Sommerfeld, Kalecinski, Queiroz, Breon Ansley and Wesley Vissers, who won the Arnold Classic Ohio and UK 2024, among others.
If the stakes weren't high enough, Chris Bumstead recently announced plans to increase the prize money for the Classic Physique division at Mr. Olympia, which will come out of his own pocket. With this in mind, fans are looking forward to Sommerfeld's next appearance!
