Pure and fresh algae oils - an ideal and ethical source of omega-3

Algae oil is made from algae, which is why it is also sometimes called vegan fish oil. How so? Fish oil is made from the fat of fish that have gained fat reserves by eating algae. The algae are thus a source of omega-3 fatty acids for the fish. Algae oil is therefore the only oil in the world that contains the same omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) as fish oil.

Authorised health claims according to Commission Regulations (EU) No 432/2012, No 536/2013 and Council Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006:

DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function / DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal vision / EPA and DHA contribute to normal heart function (a beneficial effect is achieved with an intake of 250 mg of EPA and DHA per day) / DHA and EPA contribute to the maintenance of normal blood triglyceride levels / DHA and EPA contribute to the maintenance of normal blood pressure.

Algae - the food of the future

Algae is increasingly used and will definitely be the food of the future. They are miniature plants that produce their own omega-3 fatty acids. And even on land in a closed and controlled environment. The way it works in nature is that algae transfer their omega-3s to the fish that have consumed them. So algae oil is actually just as potent and high quality as fish oil. Arctic Blue produces its oil from cultured algae in a controlled environment, this ensures that the oil is free from any contamination from the ocean. Arctic Blue Algae oil is 100% vegan, no fish oil was used in its production. The capsules are also vegan, the gelatin has also been replaced with seaweed.

Of course, it is grown without pesticides, so the oil could be labelled as organic, but unfortunately there is no legislation for this yet. But it is only a matter of time.

A plant-based alternative to fish oil

Algae are unicellular plants found in rivers and oceans. There are many species, but only one species produces the right omega-3s in large quantities. This is the Schizochytrium species from which we extract our algae oil. Just like probiotic cultures or brewer's yeast in large containers do their job, algae grows in a controlled way to a strong density. The oil is then extracted from them.

The first attempts to grow algae in terrestrial conditions produced only algae DHA oil. However, algae can be naturally directed to the point where they produce EPA oil or EPA/DHA oil. Algae oil is thus a perfect alternative to fish oil.

When choosing an algae oil, the following characteristics should be considered: official labeling/vegan certification, the amount of EPA/DHA, and the absence of unpleasant aftertaste and odor. Quality and freshness can be distinguished by these basic points. At Arctic Blue we 100% guarantee this, and we also regularly measure the freshness of the algae oil in the laboratory. As with fish oil, algae oil is measured by the so-called Totox = total oxidation value.

What about the ideal ratio between DHA and EPA?

DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) are very similar. The only difference is that DHA has 22 carbons in its chain, while EPA has 20 carbons. DHA has properties related to tissue building, while EPA has properties related to oxidative stress. However, the body is very smart - it converts DHA to EPA as needed (just remove two carbons). Thus, with sufficient DHA intake, the body regulates the ratio between DHA and EPA itself. This is especially important for the brain, heart and nervous system.

Fresh oil from organically grown algae

Algae oil contains the same omega-3s as fish oil, so it is naturally prone to oxidation in exactly the same way. However, our algae oil is bottled and capsuled fresh, so it is guaranteed both to preserve the omega-3s and to have no unpleasant odor or aftertaste. We use only natural antioxidants to help keep it fresh.

Freshness can of course be measured by smelling or tasting - fresh oil will never smell of odour. But freshness can also be measured very precisely in the laboratory and then expressed as a number. The Totox value of Arctic Blue oils is measured regularly. In many analyses, the degree of oxidation is measured only by the peroxide value. This is insufficient because the peroxides are further converted. We therefore also measure a second indicator, the anisidine value. Only with both of these values can the correct total oxidation and freshness be determined.

This is the internationally recognised value for recognising oxidation in oil. The lower the number, the fresher the oil. The European standard for the Totox value is 26. In our opinion, this is a ridiculously high number and we are happy to be below 1/3 of this value to guarantee an exceptionally safe and quality product. The peroxide value of Pure Arctic MSC fish oil for capsules is always between 0 and 0.5 and the anisidine value < 1 or < 2, so the Totox value is < 2 or < 3. Bottle filling or capsule manufacture increases the Totox value slightly, bringing the value for Arctic Blue MSC fish oil and Algae oil capsule to the usual value of 5 with a maximum variation of 5-10.

Some brands offering omega-3 fats very often and deliberately quote the Totox value of the original raw material, i.e. the fish oil, before the oil is infused / encapsulated into the final product. A fair manufacturer will always quote the actual Totox value, i.e. the value that corresponds to the state after the oil has been infused. Of course, Artic Blue prides itself on an honest and serious approach to the customer.
