Magnesium L-threonate is the magnesium salt of L-threonic acid, with threonic acid being a metabolic by-product of vitamin C. Due to the properties of this sugar acid derived from threose, magnesium L-threonate is able to cross the blood-brain barrier and penetrate cell membranes. It uses the transporters through which glucose passes.

(Magnesium L-threonate has been shown to penetrate the blood-brain barrier more efficiently than other forms of magnesium, but the specific permeability of other forms has not yet been accurately described.)
